Meaning and History
Listerine is a globally recognized oral care brand known for its powerful mouthwash products that promote a healthier mouth and fresher breath. Originally developed in the 19th century as a surgical antiseptic, Listerine evolved into a leading mouthwash brand by focusing on killing bacteria that cause bad breath, plaque, and gum disease. Today, the brand offers a variety of mouth rinses, each designed to target specific oral health needs, from cavity prevention to gum health.
Trusted by dentists and consumers alike, Listerine has become a household name synonymous with effective oral hygiene and a clean, refreshing feeling. Its unique formulation contains essential oils like menthol, thymol, eucalyptol, and methyl salicylate, which work together to combat bad breath and reduce plaque.
Over the years, Listerine has expanded its product line to include various formulations tailored to different needs—ranging from antiseptic rinses to those designed for sensitivity or whitening. Each product is designed not only to freshen breath but also to promote overall oral health by fighting gingivitis and providing long-lasting protection against bacteria.
Listerine’s commitment to innovative oral care solutions helps consumers maintain optimal dental health while enjoying fresh breath throughout the day.
What is Listerine?
Listerine is the name of a trusted hygiene brand renowned for its effective oral care products, particularly mouthwash. Formulated with essential oils and antiseptic ingredients, Listerine helps combat bad breath, reduce plaque, and promote overall oral hygiene.
In terms of visual identity, Listerine has always been strict and laconic. With no graphical additions, the logo of the brand is all about reliability, professionalism, and a guaranteed result.
1914 – 1960’s
The original logo of the Listerine brand was designed in 1914 and was completely in keeping with its time. It was a very elegant art-decoish wordmark with detached triangular serifs, written in solid black strokes against a background with wide light-gray shadows.
1960’s – 1995
After the first redesign, the Listerine logo became much more simple. The wordmark was rewritten in the uppercase of an extra-bold geometric sans-serif typeface, in plain black, against a white background, and accompanied by the “Antiseptic” tagline executed in the small capitals of the same style.
1995 – 2013
In 1995 the tagline was removed from the primary Listerine logo version, and the main wordmark was rewritten in a more modern sans-serif font, with taller characters and more distinctive contours. The solid black shade was changed to a lighter one, dark dark gray. Another interesting thing about the new badge was in the first “L”, which was a bit taller than all the other characters.
2013 – today
The redesign of 2013 has evened up the characters of the wordmark to one size and switched the dark gray shade to solid black. Not much has changed, but the overall image started looking much stronger with a perfect balance of shapes and spaces.
Colors
The brutal and stable lettering on the official logo of the Listerine brand is written in a massive geometric sans-serif typeface, which is quite similar to a well-known Neue Plaktrade font, but with some slight modifications. The black color palette of the composition only enhances the geometry of the typeface and shows the brand as a professional and trustworthy one.
