Meaning and history

The corporation was founded in 1906 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. However, its history began twenty years earlier, in 1885, when Albert Butz invented a thermostat and regulator for a coal stove. At the same time, the scientist founded Butz Thermo – Electric Regulator Co. In 1893 the Consolidated Temperature Controlling Co. acquires the patents and business of Albert Butts and changes the name to Electric Heat Regulator Co. and in 1916 the name was changed to Minneapolis Heat Regulator.
A parallel line of the story: In 1904 in Indiana, Mark Honeywell launched generators and heating devices and founded Honeywell two years later. In 1927 Honeywell’s company merged with Minneapolis Heat Regulator, forming Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co. In 1934, Honeywell acquired Time-O-Stat Controls Corporation, and a long history of international business expansion began.
Today, Honeywell is on the Ethisphere Institute’s list of the world’s most ethical companies and Forbes’ list of the world’s 10 most innovative companies. Worldwide, the corporation provides services in such areas as aerospace technology, office, industrial, and residential building management technology, automotive technology, turbochargers, and specialty materials.

In terms of visual identity, Honeywell is very traditional and elegant, however, the color of the badge and the shape of the characters evoke a sense of stability, professionalism, and perfectionism.
1924 – 1937
The visual identity of the Honeywell company, created in 1924, was based on elegant black lettering, executed in a classy gothic style typeface and written in one line against a transparent background. It looked very confident and professional, which let the badge stay with the brand for longer than a decade.
1937 – 1942
The redesign of 1937 changed the typeface of the Honeywell wordmark to a rounded typewriter one, with the “Minneapolis Honeywell” inscription executed in the uppercase, and having a small solid dot in between the two parts of the company’s name.
1942 – 1948
In 1942 the name of the company was extended to “Minneapolis Honeywell Controls”, and the design of the lettering was changed significantly. Now the black uppercase inscription I was set in a distinctive sans-serif typeface with clean contours of the characters and straight cuts of the bars. The simplicity of the logo only favored the company, showing it as a strict professional.
1948 – 1958
The redesign of 1948 has emphasized the “Honeywell” part of the company’s name, enlarging it and emboldening its characters. The white lettering was now written across the solid black horizontally oriented rectangular badge, with the middle line executed in an elegant serif typeface; while the additional text was set in the uppercase of a modern sans-serif font.
1958 – 1965
Another design concept was created for Honeywell at the end of the 1950s. Now the bold title case wordmark in a fancy serif typeface was accompanied by a bright red and white emblem, where the massive capital “H” in white was set in a solid red icon in the shape of a square with the top right and bottom left angles rounded.
1965 – 1980’s
The redesign of 1965 surprised everyone, introducing a badge, which was completely different from all the previous versions. It was a white uppercase “Honeywell” inscription executed in a futuristic sans-serif typeface with an interesting geometry of the characters and softened ends of the bars. The white wordmark was placed against a dark gradient-red horizontal banner.
1980’s – 1991
The original Honeywell logo featured a bold black lettering set against a transparent background with no additional elements. The title case inscription was written in a classy serif typeface with slightly flattened and extended letters. The font was a modification of Claire Newstrade, a very elegant type, which represented the company as a reliable and reputable one.
1991 – Today
The redesign of 1991 introduced a refreshed and modernized version of the Honeywell logo, which stayed with the company for decades. The black serif lettering turned into a strong red sans-serif inscription, with just the shape of the “Y” resembling the previous badge. Its curved tails with a solid dot on the end make up the main accent in the bold geometric composition, and the shade of red represents the strength of the company.
Font and color
The bold title case lettering from the primary logo of the Honeywell corporation is set in a stylized sans-serif typeface, which has a lot in common with such commercial fonts as Motoya Aporo and KyivType Sans, but with the completely modified letter “Y”.
As for the color palette of the Honeywell visual identity, it is based on a deep and bright shade of red, which is associated with the excellence, professionalism, and confidence of the company in its field of activity.
